Exhibitions Jean Gaumy et la mer & la pêche au-delà du cliché

At the Musée National de la Marine

Through August 17th, 2025.

The Musée national de la Marine immerses the visitor in the fascinating world of maritime photography from the second half of the 19th century to the present day by showcasing two exhibitions with complementary themes. The exhibition "Jean Gaumy et la mer" celebrates a lover of the sea and its shores, which he has traversed since the beginning of his career in the 1970s. A major figure in contemporary photography, a member of the Magnum Photos agency, the Academy of Fine Arts, and an official Marine painter, Jean Gaumy has managed to capture with rare intensity the fishing

communities at the four corners of the planet, from Normandy to Greenland, passing through Andalusia, Long Island, and the Gironde. The exhibition "La pêche au-delà du cliché, inédits de la collection" allows visitors to discover how fishing, a demanding profession, the sea, and fishing communities have been perceived by photographers from the mid 19th century to the early 21st century. Nearly 130 pieces from

the museum's collection are being presented to the public for the first time.
