Exhibition : Des chevaux et des hommes

At the Musée de la Grande Guerre - Meaux

Through to January 4th, 2026.

During the World War I, the French armies incorporated millions of animals, particularly horses, donkeys, and mules, which transported troops and equipment. What was their fate? This is the subject of the exhibition "Horses and Men" to be discovered at the Great War Museum. The exhibition addresses the shared history of men and horses, their place in the conflict, their roles in the diff erent armies, and their relationships with humans that go beyond strict military use. In total, the French armies incorporated nearly 1.9 million horses and mules, with losses reaching 1.14 million. For a better understanding of the exhibition, mediation devices accessible to all are presented throughout the course, such as objects to touch.
