S ince its opening in 2022, the Cité du Vitrail located in the Hotel-Dieu-le-Comte
in Troyes has quickly established itself as one of the major cultural sites in the
nearby Île-de-France region. Dedicated to the art, history of stained glass, and the
unique masterpieces of the master glassmakers of Aube, a department with the
richest glass heritage in France from the 12th to the 21st century, the visitor discovers
at eye level the numerous styles and creation periods, the manufacturing techniques,
as well as the functions of stained glass. A collection with a presentation in perpetual
transformation, inviting visitors to return regularly to discover the wonders of colours
and glass.
It is a true breath of fresh air that blows through the permanent exhibition within
the Cité, such as this cycle of 14 panels depicting the life of Saint Augustine, which
came from the Saint-Ferréol abbey in Essômes-sur-Marne in Aisne and date back to
the 16th century. Or these contemporary stained glass windows designed for salons and world exhibitions in the 1930s. Also contemporary, these Cistercian stained glass windows dated 1990 from Notre-Dame d’Acey in the Jura, which serve as testimonies of the dialogue around the creation of an artist Jean Ricardon, a master glassmaker Pierre-Alain Parot, and a religious community, such as the presentation of preparatory works, trial windows, and glass models. Finally, in the chapel during their restoration, visitors will be able to contemplate three sets of magnificent and remarkable windows emblematic of the 16th-century Champagne region.
