A Historical French Gem

At Vaux-le-Vicomte

It was commissioned by Nicolas Fouquet, who wished to welcome Louis XIV and his court for a lavish celebration in 1661. It took the finest architects, landscape designers, painters and fountain-makers of the era nine years to complete Vaux-le- Vicomte — many of whom would later contribute to the creation of Versailles — making it one of the most extravagant and magnificent palaces of the 17th century.

With more than a hundred rooms, majestic formal French gardens offering one of the most spectacular perspectives ever designed, fountains soaring into a thousand jets of water and vast stables, Vaux-le-Vicomte embodies the splendour and excesses of the Grand Siècle. But Louis XIV, offended by the ostentation and by the

financial misconduct of his minister, had Nicolas Fouquet arrested just a few weeks after the festivities.

Since then, the château has become a historical treasure that has survived the centuries

and the trials of time. Beautifully restored to the height of its splendour, Vaux-le-Vicomte

now off ers visitors a memorable experience and extraordinary events throughout the

year.

Visitors discover an architectural masterpiece organised over three levels, fully furnished and decorated as it would have been in Fouquet’s time. The apartments, grand reception rooms, King’s Chamber and impressive kitchens off er a fascinating

insight into the French art of living in the 17th century. Technological innovations

also provide a variety of immersive experiences, including a 3D audio-guided tour,

immersive projections on the monumental ceiling of the Grand Salon and a panoramic

rooftop tour. Younger visitors can even explore the château dressed in period costumes.

Guests are then invited to wander through the formal French gardens, discovering their

theatrical layout enhanced by fountains, waterfalls and hidden surprises. The visit can

be enjoyed either on foot or by electric buggy. During the candlelit evenings (every

Saturday from May 16th to September 26th), visitors can admire the fountains brought

to life.

Finally, the grand stables house a unique exhibition of horse-drawn carriages spanning

the last three centuries
