Exhibition : 1913-1923, l'esprit du temps

At the Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac

Through to October 15th, 2026.

The musée du quai Branly- Jacques Chirac off ers a fascinating exploration of the history of African and Oceanic arts in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially perceived as ethnographic objects, these items would gradually be recognised as fullfledged works of art, marking a major turning point in the history of Western art and the international art market. The commitment of avant-garde artists like Vlaminck, Derain, Matisse, and Picasso, intellectuals like Guillaume Apollinaire, and dealers like Paul Guillaume, Joseph Brummer, and Charles Vignier helped change the perception of these objects that had long been ignored and undervalued. This exhibition, through archival documents, photographs, and sculptures from Africa and Oceania, evokes the stimulating atmosphere of the Montparnasse district and highlights emblematic exhibitions such as those of the Levesque gallery in 1913.
